Class, Classes, and Classic Race Baiting: What’s in a Definition?

Overall, in this Article, we briefly lay out each of our challenges to Sander\u27s arguments in Class in American Legal Education. In Part I, we first address the very problems that Sander\u27s article highlights about the difficulties of defining class and SES, problems that may make classbased affirmative action programs less feasible and effective than Sander suggests. In so doing, we identify what we consider to be defects in Sander\u27s class/SES groupings. We also highlight the complexities around class and race that already exist within law student populations, answering in part the important questions about to whom black law students are relatively advantaged or disadvantaged. In Part II, we focus on responding to Sander\u27s substantive arguments against race-based affirmative action, demonstrating why class-based affirmative action is an inadequate substitute and why race-based affirmative action is still needed

    Are Protein Folds Atypical?

Protein structures are a very special class among all possible structures. It was suggested that a ``designability principle'' plays a crucial role in nature's selection of protein sequences and structures. Here we provide a theoretical base for such a selection principle, using a novel formulation of the protein folding problem based on hydrophobic interactions. A structure is reduced to a string of 0's and 1's which represent the surface and core sites, respectively, as the backbone is traced. Each structure is therefore associated with one point in a high dimensional space. Sequences are represented by strings of their hydrophobicities and thus can be mapped into the same space. A sequence which lies closer to a particular structure in this space than to any other structures will have that structure as its ground state. Atypical structures, namely those far away from other structures in the high dimensional space, have more sequences which fold into them, and are thermodynamically more stable. We argue that the most common folds of proteins are the most atypical in the space of possible structures.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

Playing endgame chess with the Tsetlin Machine

Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology (IKT590)The report is about training an Artificial Intelligence(AI) that is able to play out endgames, using the existing solved endgame of chess to train the Tsetlin Machine on. This report describes the methods used to train and test a Tsetlin Ma-chine using both the convolutional and multiclass implementation. We have further tested out different methods to handle the data it trains on to investigate what methods work best. Where these methods are; to split the data for two machines for either white or black starting player, transforming the data to only be from one starting players perspective and one splitting based on results by first having one machine looking at win versus draw and loss, then a second machine for looking at draw versus loss. The results showed that some of the methods used, involving only looking at one players perspective, worked well for predicting if the board would lead to a win with perfect play. Since several om the methods achieved over90% accuracy in the testing, while the best achieves an accuracy of 95%. However the playing off the endgame was lacking, as the games mostly ended in draws even when the Tsetlin Machine should have been able to win. Some new results on irradiation characteristics of synthetic quartz crystals and their application to radiation hardening

The paper reports some new results on irradiation characteristics of synthetic quartz crystals and their application to radiation hardening. The present results show how the frequency shift in quartz crystals can be influenced by heat processing prior to irradiation and how this procedure can lead to radiation hardening for obtaining precise frequencies and time intervals from quartz oscillators in space
